Cardoza, David. Two words that are going to live long in the memory of Northampton Town fans, and for all the wrong reasons!
Even if you were previously a supporter of his, it's now impossible to present him in a positive light. The man appears to be single-handedly hell bent on destroying a football club that is dear to thousands of people. And for the rest of Northampton, who don't really care, he's the person who appears to have 'lost' over £10million of public money. So whether you're a Cobblers fan or not, this week is huge for Northampton.
For the past couple of months anyone with NTFC close to their hearts has done their level best: The staff at the club are working without being paid. The Supporters Trust have raised the best part of £50k, As we speak close on 2000 people have signed a petition pleading with him to sell. And on top of that, almost unbelievably given the circumstances, the team are in an automatic promotion spot.
DC has been rightly lambasted on twitter and internet forums. The club manager made an impassioned plea, live on the BBC for him to sell. Whoever is running the clubs social media accounts has come out and blasted him in public - which in ordinary times would be a funny way to resign, but these are not ordinary times.
Depending on how things pan out this week the club could either be in administration, or gone. One man holds the key to all of this and yet for reasons known only to himself seems to have decided to take the ship down with him. Amazingly there are three offers on the table. This club is not a dead loss. It has promotion potential, a decent ground and sound fan base. People want to buy it. One consortium is made up of known local people who can probably do no more than rescue the situation temporarily. Another potential buyer is a complete unknown, unless you're a Swindon Town fan, and according to them doesn't bode at all well, and the other deal - the one that everyone one wants - seems ready to go, well funded and credible.
And yet, and yet, the man wont sell. Even though he says 'its not about the money', hes undoubtedly attempting to exit this shambles with either money / by not going bankrupt himself / with some credibility / or any of the above. Either way hes playing a very dangerous game. Time is running out. We don't have a month, a season, endless options. We have the rest of this week.
We're away at Crawley tomorrow. The away support will be fantastic as usual and yet to all intents and purposes, everything that the supporters have done so far will come to nothing unless one man decides this morning to make the right decision, not for himself, but for a football club.
One of the reasons I love football is for the terrace humour. There is no humour in this situation. No jokes, no funny songs. Just desperate people hoping for the best. DC wont be reading this. He wont be checking his 'likes' on Facebook this morning or seeing how well hes trending on twitter. He doesn't need to do any of these things. He just needs to sell the club and walk away. If I could make him do that I would, but none of us can. We just have to hope that in his head reason will prevail before its too late.
Come on man, do the right thing and do it now!
