Wirral Docks and Mersey Tunnel Spur

Just as interesting as the dock areas of Liverpool are the now largely disused industrial areas over the water in the Wirral. Of particular interest is the Mersey Tunnel spur. The original Mersey tunnel actually has junctions under the river. One takes you off the main tunnel route and brings you up near the Liver building. The other, travelling to the Wirral takes you off the main route and comes up in the dock area.

There are some pictures of the entrance below. The most surprising thing is that I don't think this spur was every used. Its looks pristine, as though it has just been built and I'm not sure that is has ever seen service.

Ray Cowles Motorcycles Pontypool

I've lived in South Wales for the best part of 25 years, and for the first few years lived near Pontypool. I used to drive past this shop every day on my way to work in Cardiff. I didn't have a bike license at the time, so it didn't much interest me - but it always struck me as looking as though it was lost in time. Roll on a quarter of a century and even though I don't live near it now, whenever I pass through Pontypool I've found myself taking the side road to see if its still there. I must have said to everyone a thousand times, "I've got to go and take a look" after all, surely it wont still be there next year.... So, at last, welcome to Ray Cowles Motorcycles of Pontypool. When I eventually popped in last week and told him my little story he laughed. It happens quite a lot apparently, people popping in to take pictures. He doesn't mind at all and says hes never been busier - apart from when he was a Honda main agent a few years back. (Hes ...

What is it about the Americans and guns?

I know that there is a piece of paper, some 200 years old, that guarantees the right to bears arms, but really – it’s a very old piece of paper, and like all rules and laws, you’re allowed to change them from time to time. I also know that it’s a hopeless argument. If private guns were banned outright today it would take centuries to get rid of them all. There are, I understand, more guns in the US than people. The gun lobby is so politically and financially powerful that change is unlikely anytime soon. But, people of the USofA, I’ve got to tell you that from where I’m sitting – 3000 miles away admittedly – your stance is completely impossible to fathom. Every day there are mass killings in the States, and every one of them is perversely used to perpetuate the myth that allowing everyone to have a gun will somehow stop the bad guys from using theirs. There is simply no evidence for that. Give me one example where the horror of a mass shooting has been stopped because ordi...
